Slide 1 - Quizvraag

If we have pollen...
Pollination can occur!

Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma of a flower.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

Types of Pollination
Self-pollination: Transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigmas of the same flower or to flowers on the same plant.

Cross Pollination: Transfer of pollen between two plants that are not of identical genetic material.

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

What are the two types of pollination?

Slide 4 - Open vraag

How pollen is transfered.
Animals can feed on flowers or brush up against them when passing by. Pollen is transferred to their coats and potentially transferred to another flower if the animal comes in contact with it.

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Insects feed on nectar and when visiting multiple flowers , they transfer pollen .

Water can move pollen from anther to stigma or plant to plant in cases of rain or irrigation.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

What is one way pollen is transferred?

Attracting Pollinators
Flowers use:
  • Color
  • Fragrence
To attract pollinators.

Fertilization
Fertilization is the union of pollen with the ovule to produce seeds.
Once pollen grains are transferred to the stigma:
  1. Pollen grains move through the pollen tube to the ovule.
  2. A pollen gamete unites with the egg cell gamete in the ovule.
  3. Ovary swells and forms the fruit.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Then... the fertilized egg goes through Meiosis.

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

What is Meiosis?

Slide 11 - Open vraag

Sex Cells
Male and female productive organs produce sex cells.

The nucleus contains chromosomes, which carry genes.

Meiosis
On the next slide, there is a link to Cells Alive. First, look through the vocabulary listed in blue. Then click "Start Animation" and look through the different stages of Meiosis. In your lab notebooks, draw the stages and write a 1 sentence narrative about what happens in each stage.

Summary
Plant fertilization occurs because pollen is carries by a pollenator to flowers. The pollen is transfered and delivered to the egg cell in the plant. The cells go throught Meiosis and then Mitosis to create new life.
