Montreal Underground City
Imagine an underground city with thousands of shops and other buildings. Science fiction? No! In 1962 the city of Montreal built an underground shopping centre under the city's first skyscraper.

Today, Montreal's Underground City is the largest underground complex in the world. There are about 2,000 shops, 200 restaurants and 30 film theatres. There is also a university, a cathedral, two bus terminals and even an Olympic park. With more than 500,000 visitors a day, Montreal's Underground City is very popular.

So, if you are in Montreal one day, and it's too cold or rainy to go shopping outside, the Underground City is the place to go! In severe winters, when the temperature goes down to -20 degrees Celsius, you can go to work, watch a film, buy a baguette, attend a concert, go skating, visit the library and finally return home, without having to go out in the cold!

Building this enormous complex wasn't an easy thing to do, of course. Take the story of the 'sinking church': part of the Underground City was built under a church. The story goes that Christchurch Cathedral started sinking when they began building. An enormous supporting pillar had to be constructed in the middle of the shopping mall. Visitors who are shopping can actually see this pillar.

The Montreal Tourist Office asked visitors what they thought of the Underground City. Here are some reviews:

What is the difference between this underground shopping mall and a regular mall? To be honest, not much. The underground shopping centre is just like any other mall. You can get lost there so you should have a map with you so you can figure out which way to go. I was a bit disappointed really, because people had told me this mall would definitely be something special.
Steven, 15, Great Britain

The Underground City of Montreal is amazing. You can go from shop to shop without ever having to go outside! Everything is available there, from clothing to supermarkets. It is even connected to some hotels. I would definitely recommend this shopping centre.
Patrick, 14, Ireland
