Think about the 16th/17th century. In that era, Europe started colonizing. What was the main goal of colonizing countries?

European empires

• During the 16e century, European countries started trading all over the world. 
• European voyagers did not go into the country, they just stayed at the coast. 
• This changed in the 19th century
  → start modern imperialism

materials and as a sales market.

Modern imperialisme: causes

1. Economic
   industrialisation → raw materials + sales market
2. Political
   prestige (nationalism!) 
3. Cultural 
   feeling of superiority + white man's burden

Differences with colonialism:

1. European countries also start to govern their colonies
2. European countries use their colonies for their industrialisation
3. Driven by nationalism  

• Main goal m.i. = creating a big empire 
• Main goal colonialism = make money

Give at least two motives for modern imperialism.

British India 

The most succesful country in creating an empire was Great Britain. 

The most important one was India, because of al the (cheap) raw materials. 

They governed India via indirect rule: British officials told local nobility what to do.
