Health and Safety at Work Act (1974)

This act covers all the health and safety legislations and states the responsibilities for you and your employer. 

Your responsibilities:
  • Maintain the health and safety of yourself and others who may be affected by your actions
  • Co-operate and communicate with your employer about health and safety issues, so your employer can keep within the law.
Electricity at work regultations: 

This act covers the use of electrical equipment. Electrical equipment must be handled correctly, checked and tested. Plug sockets must be safe and faulty equipment must be labelled, removed and reported to the relevent person. 

Your responsibilities: 
  • Not use electrical equipment until you have been trained
  • Use appliances correctly and switch them off after use
  • Check each item is in working order before using
  • Report, label and remove any faulty items.
Manual Handling Operations:

Sometimes, you will be required to move equipment and stock around the salon. This is called manual handling. There are correct ways to lift heavy items to ensure you do not injure yourself. 

Your responsibility:
  • Always ask yourself 'Can I lift this?'. If the answer is no, then don't! Ask for help. 
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH)

Chemicals and hazardous substances can enter the body through ingestion, absorption and inhalation. 

Your responsibilities:
  • Follow SHUD - Think back to your session as your will be quizzed on this later.
  • Read and follow MFI, local by laws and follow your salons policy.
  • Know where to find the COSHH data sheet.

Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulation (2013)

This regulation sets out how and what injuries need to be reported to the HSE. 
Such as:
  • A fracture (other than to fingers or toes)
  • Amputation of limbs
  • Death to worker and non-workers if they arise from a work related activity 
  • Crush injuries that lead to internal organ damage
  • Unconsciousness casued by a head injury
  • Injuries that require admittance to hospital for more than 24 hours. 
  • Industry related to occupational dermatitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and occupational asthma.

Personal Protective Equipment Regulations

These regulations where updated in 2002 and include regulations on what PPE must be supplied and made available free of charge to employees. 

Your responsibilities: 
  • Wear the PPE provided
  • Report loss, damage or shortages of PPE supplies.
Provision and use of work equipment (1998)

This is a UK law that regulates the standards of safety for equipment used in work enviroments. It aims to ensure that all equipment used in a work setting is suitable, safe and operated by trained people. 

Your responsibility:
  • Only use equipment if you have had training
  • Check workplace and equipment prior to use
  • Report any defective equipment 
  • Ensure you are familiar with the risk assessements involved
  • Use tools as they were intended to be used.
