As Heather just told, it's a very good idea to create a goal before your reading session. You don't need fifteen goals. One goal is more than enough and provides something to focus on during the session. You can choose one of the following goals: sight words, comprehension, fluency and the word work itself.

Theme

*The theme of a story applies to many situations, not just one specific event.

Ask yourself:

What big lesson does the author want me to learn from this story?

Examples of possible themes:

Hardwork pays off. 

It is okay to be different. 

Actions speak louder than words. 

Stand up for what you believe in.
