How do you emphasise your point in your writing?

Let's count the ways:
  1. Using lists of three
  2. Using superlative forms
  3. Using 2 contrasting ideas
  4. Using interesting or extreme adjectives
  5. Emphasising a negative statement

Slide 23 - Tekstslide

You will be expected, in your next writing assignment, to apply AT LEAST 5 of these writing techniques/tools in your article about Teamwork.
Tool 1:   List of three
My grandmother was known for her generosity, cooking abilities and sheer intelligence.

The teacher was strict, funny and fair.

Slide 24 - Tekstslide

Useful tool: Creates impact and makes the statement more memorable.

- For longer sentences, use linkers: firstly, secondly, thirdly.
Tool 2:  Using superlative forms
This is one of the juiciest and most extraordinary hamburgers I have ever eaten in my life.

That exam was the most difficult exam ever!

Slide 25 - Tekstslide

THE MOST ...., THE BEST...., ETC. ARE
OFTEN USED WITH EXPRESSIONS SUCH AS (ONE OF THE).... IN THE WORLD, IN THE COUNTRY, OR WITH ever.
Tool 3:  Using 2 contrasting ideas
I love classical ballet while my brother loves rugby.

My father is a die-hard conservative whereas my mother is a bleeding liberal.

Slide 26 - Tekstslide

The contrast of 2 different or opposite ideas using balanced or parallel words or the same grammatical form can make an impact.
Used often by public speakers and politicians.
Tool 4:  Using interesting or extreme adjectives
The last book I read by Stephen King was mesmerizing.

Our guest speaker, Queen Maxima, was very eloquent.

Slide 27 - Tekstslide

If you want to emphasis your point when writing or speaking it is much more engaging for the reader if you use a variety of adjectives and EXTREME adjectives RATHER than more ordinary ones like: GOOD / BAD / NICE/ DIFFICULT

MESMERIZING:  have someone's attention completely so that they cannot think of anything else:
ELOQUENT:  Expressing oneself readily, clearly and effectively.

Tool 5:   Emphasising a negative statement
This statistics course is anything but easy. (In other words, it is difficult.)

The student didn't do any homework whatsoever/at all.

Slide 28 - Tekstslide

Can use expressions such as ANYTHING BUT + an adjective.

WHATSOEVER / AT ALL
IT ISN'T / WASN'T
