Word Order: Basic word order
When a sentence contains more than two elements, they need to be in a certain order.

Word order: Subject
The person or thing who does something in a sentence. 

I love music

My father is a carpenter

Word order: Verbs
Subject and verb(s):

The subject and the verb are always as close together as possible. If there is more than one verb in a sentence (or part of a sentence), these also stay together. For example:

You could have told me this yesterday.

Word order: Direct Object
Direct object:

You can find the direct object by finding the verb and asking "what?".

For example:

He gave the beggar a gold coin.

Step 1. Find the verb = “gave”
Step 2. Ask "What?" or "Whom?" = “a gold coin”

(Therefore, the direct object is “a gold coin”.)

Word order: Indirect Object
Indirect object:

You can find the indirect object by first finding the direct object. Once you've found the direct object, ask who or what received it.
For example:

He gave the beggar a gold coin.

Step 1. Find the verb = “gave”
Step 2. Ask "What?" or "Whom" = “a gold coin”
Step 3. Ask “who or what received the gold coin” = “the beggar”

(Therefore, “the beggar” is the indirect object.)

Word order: Adverbs of place
Adverbs of place:

If a sentence contains an adverb of place, this is placed at the end of a sentence:

My brother is cooking in the kitchen
The books are in the closet

Adverbs of time:

If a sentence contains an adverb of time, this is placed at the end of a sentence:

We saw each other a month ago
I lost my keys yesterday

Adverbs of place & time:

When a sentence contains both an adverb of time and place, place always comes before time:

We saw each other in Belgium a month ago
I lost my keys in the supermarket yesterday

Word order: adverbs of frequency
An adverb of frequency can be added to a sentence as well. The position of this adverb depends on the verbs.


Before the verb, if there is only one verb in the sentence:
My brother always walks the dog twice a day

After ‘to be’, if ‘to be’ is the only verb in the sentence:
I am always late

After the first verb, if there are more verbs in the sentence:
I have never seen that film
I have often been skiing in Austria
She should never have said that

Articles a / an
You get a when the sound of the word behind it starts with a consonent:

A book 
A unit (You say Junit)
A university

You get an when the sound of the word behind it starts with a vowel:

An apple

At – specific times
  • At 4 o’clock

On – days, dates or days of the week

  • In the middle of the month

Prepositions - Place
In – a country, city, neighbourhood or closed space
  • We are in ‘s-Hertogenbosch
  • There is a bowling alley in the Maaspoort
  • The chairs are in the classroom


At – an adress, a specific location
  • I live at Vlijmenseweg 1
  • Let’s meet at reception
  • He’s at school now


On – streets, surfaces (table)
  • The subway is on the Onderwijsboulevard
  • I met him on 5th Avenue
  • The keys are on the table.

Other prepositions
Since – Period from a certain day onwards till now
  •  We’ve been at this hotel since last Friday.

For – for the length of the whole period
  •  We’ve been at this hotel for 2 week.

Between – between two places or things
  •  There are mountains between Italy and Switzerland.

During – when something happens at the same time as something else
  •  During my sickness, a colleague covered for me.

Pronouns (voornaamwoorden)
In English there are 5 kinds of Pronouns

Personal: I, you, he/she/it, we, you, they
Possessive: my, your, his, her, its, our, your, their
Reflexive: myself, yourself, him/her/itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves
Demonstrative: this, that, these, those
Relative: who/that, which/that, whose, whom, where

Personal pronouns
I, you, he/she/it, we, you, they

Words refer to people or things – can be replaced by a noun 

I liked the movie a lot
He thought the mogive was quite scary
we will not watch the movie again

my, your, his, her, its, our, your, their

Are in front of a noun (zelfstandig naamwoord) and tell you who is the owner of something

This is my book.
Their book is still in the kitchen.

Reflexive pronouns
Myself, yourself, him/her/itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves.

Are used to refer back to the subject of the sentence.

Peter hit himself with his own tennis racket during the match.

Present Continuous - Use
We use the present continuous to describe things that are happening right now:

You are listening to your teacher while your teacher is explaining the theory

We use the present simple for:

Present Simple - Facts & General truths
We use the present simple when something is generally or
always true: 

People need food. 
In Canada, it snows in winter. 
Two and two make four.

Present Simple - (semi) permanent situations
We also need to use this tense for a situation that we think is more or less permanent:

Where do you live
She works in a bank. 
don't like mushrooms. 
My brother is 18 years old.

Present Simple - habits
We use the present simple when we talk about habits.

Habits are repeated actions or things that we do regularly. We often use adverbs of frequency (such as 'often', 'always' and 'sometimes') in this case, as well as expressions like 'every Sunday' or 'twice a month’:

Do you smoke
play tennis every Tuesday. 
don't travel very often.

Present Simple - Short actions
We can also use the present simple for short actions that are happening now. The actions are so short that they are finished almost 
as soon as you've said the sentence. This is often used with 
sports commentary:


He takes the ball, he runs down the wing, and he scores!
