Important concepts
  • Parliament = States General = House of representatives (Tweede Kamer) & the Senate (Eerste Kamer). 
  • Cabinet = Ministers + Prime minister + Secretaries of State.
  • Government = Ministers + King.
  • Council of ministers = all ministers.
  • Inaugural address = Speech when a function or title is taken on.

  • In the Netherlands this power lies with parliament.
  • This power lies with those who make the laws. 
  • Our legislative power is chosen! (local, province, country and european). Nowadays we choose who ends up in the House of Representatives. The Provincial council chooses who ends up in the Senate.

  • William I sees himself as the only one responsible for the country.

  • The constitution states that he can employ or fire ministers. 

  • The Netherlands is a Constitutional Monarchy.

1830-1839: Belgium gains its independance
Causes
  • Dutch is the official language

  • Protestantism is the state religion: Belgium is mostly catholic.

  • Dutch people usually have the most important jobs

  • The Netherlands is favored

The end of William
  •  After the revolt and a small war Leopold I becomes king of Belgium. 
  • William I now rules over the Kingdom of the Netherlands
  • He abdicates after wanting to marry Henriëtte d'Oultremont de Wégimont. A Belgian, catholic Duchess.
