Water shortages
North of China > Gobi desert

Huang He / Yellow River dries up
> Shortages in the densely populated delta

Water consumption has increased due to changes in the way of life
and an expending population

Storage dams to control the water level.
Disadvantage: a lot of evaporation

Groundwater / surface water
Aquifer = an underground water-bearing layer

> Needed for agriculture
> Needed as drinking water

Groundwater level drops at least 1 m every year!
Amount pumped water is bigger than precipitation
 > water is not  used sustainable!

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

What could be a good solution for those water issues?

Slide 13 - Open vraag

Wet in the south, dry in the north
Solution = water from the wet south to the dry north
> South-to-North Water Diversion Project

Expensive! > 50 billion
- Digging canals
- Building tunnels under rivers
