A communist society
Communist society = society in which everything is owned by the state.

  • The communist government took full control of economy. 
     - Russian industry became state-owned.
     - Farmland from landowners was distributed among the peasants. 

  • Religion was banned from society and women received the same rights as men. 
  • Lenin gradually became a dictator, a leader with absolute power.

A dictatorship
1918-1922 Civil war between Reds (communists) and Whites (everyone else). Bolsheviks won the civil war.
1922 Soviet Union (USSR) founded. 


In 1924, Joseph Stalin became the new leader of the Soviet Union. 
- ruthless dictator, 
- using propaganda to indoctrinate the Russian people.

A dictatorship
The Soviet Union became a dictatorship:
  • Ruled by the communist party - other parties were banned -  under the leadership of Lenin and - later - Stalin.
  • Criticism of the communist party was not allowed.
  • The communist party controlled what was learned and said at schools, the library, trade union and clubs. 
  • Secret police kept an eye on everyone and arrested people who were seen as a threat to communism. People would be send to Gulags in Siberia or executed. 
Totalitarian state = a state in which the government controls every part of people’s life
