Exploring Water Ecosystems!

What do you already know about living things in water environments?

What will you learn today?

At the end of the lesson you will be able to describe what an ecosystem is, identify different water ecosystems, and explain how living things interact in these environments.

What is an Ecosystem?

An ecosystem is a community of living things and their environment working together. Both plants and animals depend on each other and their surroundings.

Types of Ecosystems

There are many types of ecosystems: forests, deserts, grasslands, and water ecosystems. Today, we will focus on water ecosystems.

What Are Water Ecosystems?

Water ecosystems are areas where water is the main part of the environment. They can be freshwater or saltwater.

Freshwater vs Saltwater

Lakes, rivers, ponds and streams. Most have very little salt.

Saltwater

Seas and oceans. These have a lot of salt.

Freshwater

What Lives in Water Ecosystems?

Many plants and animals live in water. Examples: fish, frogs, ducks, reeds, and water lilies.

How Do Living Things Interact?

Plants provide oxygen and food. Animals eat plants or other animals. All living things depend on one another.

Food Chains in Water

A food chain shows who eats whom. It starts with plants, then small animals, then bigger animals.

Producers and Consumers

Plants are producers because they make food using sunlight. Animals are consumers because they eat plants or other animals.

The Role of Decomposers

Decomposers, like bacteria, break down dead plants and animals. This keeps the ecosystem healthy.

Habitats Within Water

Some living things live on the surface, some underwater, and some in the mud at the bottom.

How Do Water Ecosystems Change?

Weather, seasons, and human activities can change water ecosystems. Changes affect the living things that depend on them.

Threats to Water Ecosystems

Pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction harm water ecosystems and the animals that live there.

How Can We Help?

We can protect water ecosystems by keeping water clean, protecting animals, and using water wisely.

Fun Fact!

Did you know? A single pond can support hundreds of different kinds of plants and animals.
