We use than in a comparitive sentence. 

ln all other cases we use then. (mostly refering to time)

positive - comparitive - superlative

nice             -              nicer                  -           nicest

* one syllable adjectives: add -er/-est  (fast/faster/fastest)

* one syllable adjectives ending in consonant + vowel + consonant: double the final consonant + -er/-est  ( big/bigger/biggest)

* two syllable adjectives ending in consonant + 

-y: delete the -y and add -ier/-iest  

(tidy/tidier/tidiest)

* two or more syllable adjectives: add more/most in front of the adjective: more/most succesful)

* irregular adjectives: learn them!!
