Past simple
Aangeven dat iets in het verleden plaatsvond / gebeurde.

Werkwoord + ed of irregular (onregelmatig)

I walked for hours yesterday.
I made a shocking discovery.

Past continuous
Aangeven dat iets op een bepaald moment in het verleden aan de gang was.

Verleden tijd to be (was/were) + ing

He was looking down the hill.
They were searching all night long.

Past simple + continuous
Combinatie: geeft aan dat er iets gebeurde (simple) terwijl er iets anders aan de gang was (continuous).

He broke his leg when he was skiing
I was looking around when I saw him standing there.
