Active sentences-> To focus on who did it.

Passive sentences-> To focus on what happened (who did is is not important or unknown).

You use the passive to focus on what is happening, rather than who is doing it.

In other words:
What happened is more important than who did it.

To make an active sentence passive, you have to be able to recognise the following:

Subject
Verb 
Object

Which form of "to be" do I use?
- Find the tense of the active sentence
- Use that same tense for the form of to be!
- Add the Past Participle of the original verb

They manufacture these cars in Germany. (present simple)
These cars are manufactured in Germany. 

His great grandfather built this church. (past simple)
This church  was built by his great grandfather.
