Roots!

What is the purpose of roots?

Purpose

• To provide stability for the plant. (So they won't fall over.)
• To transport food and water to the plant from the roots.

How many types of roots do you think there are?

Fiberous Roots

These roots stay shallow in the soil.

Example: Grasses

Tuberous Roots

These are the roots that people eat. 

They store energy for the plant to use later.

Examples: Potatoes and radishes

Tap Roots

They have one large root that goes deep into the soil. This allows the plant to search for water in deeper places.  These roots are harder to kill. 

Examples: Trees, Dandilions
