Planning - Lesson Today
activating prior knowledge - mindmap + extension
elements from periodic system
homework
demo (if time left)

#### Slide 1 -Tekstslide

Work in pairs or alone
Speak English
Group the concepts
Give each group a name
Discuss in English
Extension
Go through the study planner and make 3 lists:
2. I know this a bit - I'd like to know more
3. I don't know this yet
"Building Blocks"
What do think of?
5 concepts

#### Slide 2 -Woordweb

Which elements from the period system do you know already?

#### Slide 3 -Woordweb

Homework
Study elements handout gases
Read page 101, 102, 103 about the composition of air. (to get an idea of applications)
Bring 2 pieces of thick paper size A4 or one larger piece, a 30 cm ruler, coloured pens and scissors. (we are going to learn how to study elements)

#### Slide 4 -Tekstslide

Make flash cards for the elements
Take a piece of thick paper or think cardboard.
Make cards of 4 x 4 cm.
On the one side you write the symbol.
On the other side you write the name in English at the top and in Dutch at the bottom. Work as neatly as possible.

#### Slide 5 -Tekstslide

Elements
States of matter

#### Slide 6 -Tekstslide

What is the symbol of Argon?

#### Slide 7 -Open vraag

What is the symbol of Stikstof?

#### Slide 8 -Open vraag

What is the Dutch name of Hydrogen?

#### Slide 9 -Open vraag

What is the element with the symbol Ne?

#### Slide 10 -Open vraag

Elements Study Tips
Start a symbol with a capital letter to distinguish a new element.
Example: CO = carbon monoxide; Co = cobalt
Study the elements with one letter separately from the ones with two letters.
Eg. C = carbon, Ca = calcium
Place confusing elements/symbols in a separate list.
Eg. N = nitrogen / stikstof; S = sulphur / zwavel
Eg. Au, Ag, Ar, Al, Si

#### Slide 11 -Tekstslide

Try to find out questions
1. make sure to know what all words mean
2. find a knowledgeable person in your network (inc. yourself)
3. look up keywords on internet

#### Slide 12 -Tekstslide

Extra notes on states of matter
Whipped cream = foam = mixture of liquid (cream) and gas (nitrous oxide or air). See also page 57.

#### Slide 13 -Tekstslide

If you have a question about the homework write it here.

#### Slide 14 -Open vraag

Homework
Study elements handout gases, metals in mobiles and other precious metals.

Read page 32 (no questions), 33, 34, answer questions and check them in Magister

#### Slide 15 -Tekstslide

What is the symbol of Iron/ijzer?

#### Slide 16 -Open vraag

What is the symbol of Silver?

#### Slide 17 -Open vraag

What is the English name of Silicium?

#### Slide 18 -Open vraag

What is the element with the symbol Al?

#### Slide 19 -Open vraag

How can you recognise a metal?
Which physical properties typify a metal?

#### Slide 20 -Woordweb

Properties metals
Good electrical conductors and heat conductors.
Malleable = can be beaten into thin sheets.
Ductile = can be stretched into wire.
Possess metallic luster = shiny when polished
Opaque (not transparant) as thin sheet.
Solid at room temperature (except Hg).

#### Slide 21 -Tekstslide

Homework

Study elements handout gases, metals in mobiles and other precious metals, heavy metals/ metals in batteries.

#### Slide 22 -Tekstslide

Today we will learn ...
... what the properties are of the different states of matter.
... what happens during phase changes = state changes.

How? Using 3 games played in groups of 3.
Time? 15 minutes task 1 & 2; 15 min task 3 = 30 min total.
Need help with the content? Use p. 33, 34, 38 and 49 from your book.
Need help with the game? Ask class mates or the teacher.
When you are done? Write down in your notebook what you have learnt.

tightly held together
far apart

#### Slide 30 -Sleepvraag

Diffusion and Effusion
Diffusion = the way gases and liquids spread out to occupy all the available space moving from high concentration to low concentration.

Effusion = the way gases and soluble particles move through small holes due to their small size.
