Metonymy
Figure of speech in which the name of an object is replaced by something closely related to it.
Examples:
1. The White House declared that Corona virus was made by the Chinese. ( Witte huis = de president)
2. After leading a rebellion, he seized the throne. (Niet letterlijk de troon zelf, maar de koninglijke macht)

Metonymy or metaphor
Metaphor = object, situation, idea is described by something that it isn't. 
Metaphor: It's raining cats and dogs.
Metononymy = Use a different but related word as a substitute for another.
Metononymy: The suits are going to come after us if we don't pay our bills
