What do you already know about factors in maths?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to identify, find, and explain factors of numbers, and why they matter in maths.

What is a Factor?

A factor is a whole number that divides exactly into another number without leaving a remainder.

Example: Factors of 12

The factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 12. These numbers can multiply together in pairs to make 12.

Prime and Composite Numbers

Has more than two factors. Example: 8 (1, 2, 4, 8)

Composite Numbers

Prime Numbers

Has exactly two factors: 1 and itself. Example: 7

Finding Factor Pairs

Factor pairs are two numbers that multiply to give the original number. For 16, the pairs are 1x16, 2x8, 4x4.

How to Find All Factors?

Start with 1 and the number itself. Test numbers in between to see if they divide exactly.

Why Are Factors Important?

Factors help with simplifying fractions, finding greatest common factors, and understanding patterns in numbers.
