Today's planning

Recap: how to write a formal letter.
Writing: get feedback on your second letter and write your third letter.

Feedback: grading your neighbours work.

Feedback: for me.

Lesson aims:

I can write a well-structured formal letter.
I can give feedback using clear criteria.

What needs to be in your formal letter?

General info

  • Formality: no gonna, wanna, can't, shouldn't.

  • Polite: "I want you to give me a refund" -> "I would like a refund"

  • Spelling:

    • 'I's should be with a CAPITAL.

    • Do not use 'I' at the start of a sentence.

    • Do not forget to add comma's and dots.

    • Do not ever add a '!' in a formal letter.

Dear Mr. Verheen (Sir/Madam als je de gender niet weet.)

Introduction

Tell us:

  • Who are you?

  • Why are you writing?

  • What do you want?

Keep in mind:
* Add one blank line before and after the introduction!

First of all, I would like to introduce myself. My name is Jantje Bakker and I am a fifteen-year-old boy from Dedemsvaart. Last week, I went to your restaurant and one of your employees was very rude to me. I would like an apology.

Main body

One paragraph = one topic.
One blank line between each paragraph.

Als er veel in de brief moet staan, probeer te sorteren wat bij elkaar past. Dit maakt je brief gemakkelijker te volgen.

To start, the employee spoke to me in a very unfriendly way. I asked a simple question about the menu, but he answered in a rude tone. Because of this, I did not feel welcome in your restaurant. As a result, my visit was unpleasant.

Conclusion

Write what you want/expect from the reader.

I hope you understand my problem. I would like an apology for this situation. I would also like a reply to this letter. Thank you for your time.

Ending your letter

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Jantje Bakker
