Mood & Hidden messages

Instruction exercise 2 + 3

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

What did you learn about poetry last week?

Slide 2 - Woordweb

Think about last week...
  • We looked at "what you need to be warm"
  • We talked the important words & ideas
  • We watched a visual poem

What kind of picture would you put in a visual poem if it had to be about this poem?

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

What is the mood of this poem?
The setting (remember?) can inform the mood of a story, but also a poem!
The imagery that is used gives you "a picture" of the poem.
Think about last week's poem
"what you need to be warm" by Neil Gaiman

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

What pictures would you put in your version of this visual poem?

Slide 5 - Open vraag

Poems & hidden messages
imagery - beeldspraak
contrast - tegenovergestelde ideeën
repetition - herhaling
symbolism - symbolen

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Examples from last week:
imagery - breath-ice on the inside of windows

(symbolism - Places we slept as children: they warm us in the memory.)

In year 3, you do not have to be able to recognize symbols ;)

Activity: mood & hidden messages
You are going to listen to a poem called "Eating poetry"

What words stand out to you?

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Ink runs from the corners of my mouth.
There is no happiness like mine.
I have been eating poetry.
The librarian does not believe what she sees.
Her eyes are sad
and she walks with her hands in her dress.
The poems are gone.
The light is dim.
The dogs are on the basement stairs and coming up.
Their eyeballs roll,
their blond legs burn like brush.
The poor librarian begins to stamp her feet and weep.
She does not understand.
When I get on my knees and lick her hand,
she screams.
I am a new man.
I snarl at her and bark.
I romp with joy in the bookish dark.
