Wanneer gebruik je de Gerund?

a Als onderwerp:   Swimming is fun

b Na voorzetsels (about, in, off, at, of, without, by, before):

   He left without paying.

c Na bepaalde uitdrukkingen (it's no use, it's no good, can't help, can’t stand)

   It's no use arguing.

d Na de werkwoorden:  give up, go on, mind, fancy, finish, quit, suggest.  

    I suggest going to the seaside

Je gebruikt de gerund ook na werkwoorden zoals like, hate, enjoy, love, remember, prefer, start, continue, keep, begin en stop wanneer het gaat over iets wat iemand vaak (of niet langer meer) doet:

I like swimming.

Harriet enjoys reading.

We don't prefer kayaking over canoeing.

to-infinitive

In alle andere gevallen gebruik je een zogeheten infinitief (to + hele werkwoord) na de genoemde werkwoorden like, hate, enjoy, love, remember, prefer, start, continue, keep, begin en stop:

I would love to swim.

He hates to tell you it won't happen.

to-infinitive

Je gebruikt het ook bij:

1. na het lijdend voorwerp: I asked him to read a book.
2. na een bijvoegelijk naamwoord dat een mening uitdrukt: It is wonderful to have a lot of friends.

I detest __ (to wait) in line at the supermarket.

The teacher stopped ___ (to talk) and left the room.

I watched him ... (to kayak) through that river.

We would like _____ (to have) a barbecue today.

Past Perfect

How?           had + past participle

The film had already started when we entered the cinema.

He had checked everything before he went to bed.

something happened in the past 

before 

something else happened in the past.

 

When do you use Past Perfect?

• If you want to add information to a story / text.

• If you want to tell that something happened before something else happened in the past.
• Often used together with past simple.

                               It is the past of the past.

I had always walked home until I bought my first car.

I had been stuck in the lift for hours when a fireman finally came and rescued me.

I... (eat) my breakfast before I ... (go) to school yesterday.

1. had eated - went
2. eated - had gone
3. had eaten - went
4. ate - had gone

I ... (finish) my report when she ... (walk) into the office.

1. finished - walked
2. had finished - walked
3. finished- had walked
4. finish - walks
