What Is Electricity?
Electricity is a type of energy made by the movement of tiny particles called electrons.

We use electricity every day to light our homes, run appliances, and charge our devices.
Electricity as Energy
Electricity is a form of energy. It can be transformed into light, heat, sound, and movement.
Sources of Electricity
Batteries and power stations are common sources of electricity.
What Are Conductors?
A conductor is a material that electricity can flow through easily. Metals are good conductors.
What Are Insulators?
Insulators stop electricity from flowing. Plastic, rubber, and wood are common insulators.
Comparing Conductors & Insulators
Insulators
Do not let electric current pass through. Example: plastic, glass, ceramic.
Let electric current pass through. Example: copper, iron, silver.
Conductors
Simple Electrical Circuits
A simple circuit needs a power source, wires, and a device like a bulb. The circuit must be complete for electricity to flow.
Open and Closed Circuits
Closed circuits let electricity through, making bulbs light up. Open (broken) circuits stop the flow, so bulbs go out.
What Makes a Circuit Useful?
Useful circuits work because they are complete. Broken circuits are not useful, as they do not let the electricity flow.
Broken Circuits
A break anywhere stops electricity. That's why switches work!
Switches: How Do They Work?
A switch opens and closes a circuit. When the switch is off, the circuit is open. On, and the circuit is closed.
Types of Switches
There are many types of switches: push buttons, light switches, and more.
Brighter and Dimmer Bulbs
Bulbs near the battery or only one on the circuit are brighter. Adding more bulbs makes them all dimmer.
Changing the Circuit
More batteries make bulbs brighter. More bulbs share the energy, making each dimmer.
Staying Safe with Electricity
Electricity can be dangerous. Never put fingers into sockets, or use damaged wires. Keep water away from electric devices.
Electrical Dangers
Electric shocks can hurt or kill. Always follow safety rules.
