Hands-On Addition & Subtraction Fun

What do you already know about adding and taking away numbers?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will be able to use objects to show addition and subtraction, solve simple maths sums, and explain how to count forwards and backwards.

Let’s Start: What is Addition?

Addition means putting groups of things together to find out how many there are in total.

Step 1: The Starting Group

Place 2 items in front of you. Count out loud: “One, two.” This helps us see the starting number.

Step 2: The Action

Add 1 more item. Say: “Plus one.” Move it next to the others. See how the group gets bigger.

Step 3: Find the Total

Count all the items from the beginning: “One, two, three!” You added the numbers together.

Now Your Turn!

Try using your worksheet with dots or spaces to draw. Show your own adding story with pictures or objects.

Take a 30 Second Quiet Break

Rule

Why?

Breaks help your brain get ready to learn new things!

No talking and no listening. Rest and get ready for the next part.

What is Subtraction?

Subtraction means taking some things away from a group. Let’s see how it works with objects.

Try a Challenge: Crossing 10

Can you solve 11 - 2 or 12 - 3? Use a number line to help you count backwards and see if you can find the answer.

Show What You Know

Try your subtraction worksheet. Use drawings or objects if you need help. Remember to count carefully.

Great Work! Behaviour Reward

If you followed the rules, you can go to the shop and buy chocolate as a reward!
