If we're going to think about future cities, we need to adress two questions that handle the past and origin of cities: 
1) Where did cities develop first? And why there?

Assignment:
  • Use Google Maps
  • Search in Vienna, Rome & Madrid for the names of the following features of the city: 
  • Main market square, largest religious building, main resource of water 
  • On the following slide, you will have the opportunity to write down your anwsers

Compare 4 cities with each other, on the following topics: 
!Use a schedule! 
- Map (how is the city constructed, divided, developed)
- Buildings (what kind of buildings do you have, high-rise or low?, where are certain types of buildings located: e.g. financial centre, shops/malls, houses)
- Water resources (lakes, rivers etc.)

The first cities had a purpose and clear function(s). If you think about those early settlements, today cities still provide the same functions, but also new ones.
