COSHH regulations cover all hazardous chemicals which are found in hair and beauty salons and can put people's health at risk through ingestion, absorption or inhalation.
Hazardous substances must be identified by a specific symbol and the suppler must legally provide you with guidelines on how to store and use (COSHH data sheet). This data sheet should be accessible to all.
What does SHUD stand for?
Store, Handle, Use, Destroy

SHUD
Under COSHH all hazardous materials must be Stored, Handled, Used and Disposed of correctly. The easiest way to remember this is SHUD:
STORED in a locked cupboard when not in use
HANDLED with correct PPE
USED according to the manufacturer's instructions
DISPOSED of in a council's hazardous bag, in a hazardous bin which a private company will incinerate or down the sink (in the case of colour)
The manufacturers will tell you how chemicals need to be disposed, and you must also follow the local by-laws

No matter how safety conscious you are, sometimes the worst can happen.
Fires, falls and other accidents happen, and when they do, a salon should have emergency procedures in place to deal with them.

What is Contact Dermatitis
Contact Dermatitis
Occupational or contact dermatitis is a NON-CONTAGIOUS skin disorder which occurs when your hands are in contact with chemicals and/or water over a prolonged period.
The hands become inflamed and are red, dry and itchy. The skin can crack and weep and, in some cases, become infected.
Although dermatitis is not contagious, it can spread to other parts of your body, including arms, face eyes and lips.
