CPE Speaking test tips: Part 1
Keep talking, explain yourself and try to use some interesting vocabulary.
Useful vocab:
I'm  speaking English for my own satisfaction/my job/ in order to improve my employment prospects.
I always loved (the sea)
I'd love to go off the beaten track
However, there's no place like home
That's a big question
I'm keen on ...
I'm an avid (traveller/reader/collector)
I haven't given it much thought until now.

CPE Speaking test tips: Part 2
  • Remember that there are 2 parts to this: a short question about a few of the pictures then a longer decision-making question related to all of the photos.
  • Question each other (show your social skills!)
  • Refer to each other's points (show that you listened to the other's story). E.g. "That's a good point you made about ..... ", "I agree with that".
  • Reach a conclusion together if possible, somebody should try to steer the conversation.

CPE Speaking test tips: Part 3
  • Ensure you have a good, clear structure. Use discourse markers such as: to begin with, the first point is, secondly, another point/solution is, finally, in conclusion. (See next slide!)

  • Include real examples and experiences as it will make your 2-minute talk more natural and interesting.

When responding to partner's contribution in parts 2 and 3:
  • Perhaps we should ... first? What do you think?
  • A strong point in favour of ... is that ....
  • What do you think should go next
  • Are you happy with this order then?
  • Do you go along with that?                                                              
  • Just following from what X was saying, I also feel .....
  • While generally agreeing with X, I must say that ....
  • Adding to what X has just said, I think ......
  • I can sympathise with what X said but ....
  • Surprising as it may seem, I don't support X's views on ......
