Geography
It is the study of the earth. 

What happens within the earth and on the earth's surface.

That region is a piece of the earth's surface, called a landscape. 
we have: Natural and man made landscapes.

Local: Village, neighbourhood, city
Regional: Province, part of country
National: Country
International: Different countries, continent
Global: Different continents, world

Switching scale levels
Scale level is important to use to weigh things up. 

A highway is a good thing when you take a look on national or international scale level. 

Taking a look on regional or local scale level you can see people that are living next to the highway that won't like it. 
(because of the noise etc.)
