The Imposter Game
Look out! There's an Imposter in your group. Luckily you and your friends have a secret codeword: you have three minutes to ask questions, listen closely to answers, and watch each other's body language to find out who knows the codeword and who doesn't. Can you unmask the Imposter? Or, will the Imposter fool everyone and figure out the codeword?

The Imposter Game: what do you need to play?
  • A Game Master (GM): this person secretely chooses an Imposter from the Players, and thinks of the special word. The Players try to keep this word a secret, while the Imposter tries to find out what it is. The GM also makes sure everyone plays by the rules. When in doubt? Ask your GM!
  • An Imposter:  this person tries to learn the secret word by asking questions and listening to the other Players. Above anything they want to stay undercover!
  • Players: these people have to find out who the Imposter is in their group by asking questions and listening to each other. Above anything they want to keep the Imposter from figuring out the secret word!

The Imposter Game: how to play?

  • Split up in groups of five or six people.
  • Every group is assigned a GM by the teacher.
  • The GM thinks of a word from the upcoming vocab test and whispers this into the ear of every Player, except for one. This person is now the Imposter. They simply get told "you are the imposter."
  • The Players get 3 minutes to ask questions and unmask the Imposter, while the Imposter tries to figure out the secret word.
  • When the clock stops, we'll have a vote together:  If the majority of the Players is correct, the Imposter is succesfully unmasked and the Players win. If the Players accuse the wrong person, the Imposter wins. The Imposter gets a point if they figured out the secret word.

Additional Rules

  • The GM makes sure the Players and the Imposter follow the rules. The GM's decision is always final.
  • Players may not say the chosen word, nor are they allowed to ask someone directly if they know the word or to say it.
  • If the word is revealed before the end of the game, the GM chooses a new word, but the Imposter remains the same. The game continues with the time that is left.
  • If the Imposter is exposed before the end of the game, the GM chooses a new word and a new Imposter.
  • If anything is unclear, ask the GM (rule 1), then the teacher.
