Sport and the Caribbean

LO:  I can identify sports and some famous athletes from the Caribbean.

The Caribbean is a sub-region of the continent of North America.

What is a continent?

A continent is a large mass of land.

There are seven continents in the world.

Cricket is a very popular sport in the Caribbean and many famous cricketers have come from there.

Sir Viv Richards was knighted by the Antiguan government for his services to cricket.

He  is considered one of the greatest batsmen  of all time.

Someone  who runs short distances very fast is called a sprinter.

Usain Bolt, who comes from Jamaica, is believed to be the greatest sprinter ever.

He has won 8 Olympic gold medals and is the world record holder for the

100 metres, 200 metres and 

the 4 x 100 metre relay.

This is the Jamaican flag.

Its 3 colours represent the sun, land and people.

Jamaica is the 3rd largest island in the Caribbean and its capital is called Kingston.

It is famous for reggae music as this is where Bob Marley is from.

The Caribbean islands are surrounded by water so there is plenty of opportunity for water sports.

Popular Caribbean water sports include snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and surfing, all of which are enjoyed in the region's clear, calm waters. 

The coral reefs and beautiful tropical fish of the Caribbean attract lots of people who go snorkelling and scuba diving.

Jamaica is near the equator and so has a warm climate which means it does not snow.

Despite not having snow, Jamaica has entered teams in the bobsleigh event at the winter Olympics.
