Sentence endings

Usage: 

 Period (.): A period is used to end a sentence.

The dog ran under the fence.

 Question mark (?): Is used for sentences that are questions 

begin with what, how, when, where, why, or who.

Where did you buy that bike?

 Exclamation mark (!): Is used to end a sentence to express an 

 intense emotion.

I’m so excited to go to the park tomorrow!

Comma, colon and semicolon

Usage:

Comma (,): Commas are used to insert a pause into a sentence.

He went to school, and then he went to the .

Colon (:): Can be used to introduce something. A colon can also be used to link two independent *clauses. Finally, a colon can also emphasize a subject in a sentence:

I only hate one vegetable: brussel sprouts.

Semicolon (;): A semicolon is also used to connect two independent clauses, but the clauses are more related.

I have a meeting tomorrow morning; I can’t go out tonight.

Dash and hyphen

Usage:

Dash (-): A dash is used to denote a range, such as between numbers or dates.

 The company was oparational from 1990-2000.

Hyphen (-): A hyphen is used in compound words when two or more words are connected.

Step-by-step

Brackets, braces and parentheses

Usage:

Brackets ([ ]): Brackets are used to clarify something or for technical terms or explanations.

She [Mrs. Smith] agrees that cats are better than dogs.

Braces: ({ }): Braces are usually used in operations.

Parentheses (( )): Parentheses are used to supply further details or information or as an aside.

Kate (who is Matt’s wife) likes to go for walks.

Apostrophe and quotation marks

Usage:

Apostrophe ('): I used to show that a letter or letters have been omitted. It can also be used to pluralize lowercase letters.

All that’s left to do is dot the i’s and cross the t’s.

Quotation marks ("): Are used to denote text, speech, or words spoken by someone else.

“I don’t like this,” said Mark.
