The pituitary gland produces both the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and the Luteinizing Hormone (LH).
When no fertilised egg implants in the uterine wall, oestrogen and progesterone levels drop. This allows the uterine wall to start to shed.

Day 1, menstruation starts all hormone levels are low. Starting around Day 5, the pituitary gland releases Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) which initiates the maturation of a follicle into an egg cell, it also signals the ovaries to release oestrogen. Around Day 14, the increase in oestrogen will signal the pituitary gland to stop producing FSH but instead will release Luteinising hormone (LH), which will signal the ovary to release the egg. The empty follicle will produce progesterone which will turn off LH production in the pituitary gland. Around Day 24, if no fertilised egg implants, the follicle in the ovary will stop producing progesterone and oestrogen and the uterus will shed it’s lining.
