Lesson aims
After this lesson you know:
  • How to write adverbs;
  • The difference between adverbs and adjectives;
  • When you can use an adverb.

Adverbs
  • Says something about a verb (werkwoord);
  • Often ends in -ly;
  • Some exceptions (fast, good, hard)
  • Ex. They are running quickly.
  • Ex. She is typing fast.

Adverbs
  • Beware of the following:
  • Words ending in -y become -ily;
  • Ex. Funny -> funnily
  • Words ending in -le become -ly;
  • Ex. Gentle -> gently
  • Words ending in -ic become -ically
  • Ex. Automatic -> automatically

Adverbs
  • Words ending in  -ue become -uly
  • Ex. True -> truly
  • Words ending in -ll become -lly
  • Ex. Full -> fully

Adjectives
  • Says something about a noun (zelfstandig naamwoord);
  • Ex. She is wearing a beautiful dress.
  • Ex. He is a fast man.

Adverb location
  • Before an adjective or another adverb:
  • Ex. He is extremely old.
  • Ex. They are typing incredibly quickly.
  • Before the main verb:
  • Ex. She quickly asked him a question.
  • At the end of a sentence for emphasis:
  • She takes her job seriously.
