  WOOD: Marc, the Home Chef
Hi, me and my wife recently moved into a small townhouse, and we both love cooking together. I really enjoy preparing fresh ingredients and often work directly on the counter when chopping vegetables. The problem is, our current wooden countertop stains very easily. Every time I spill a bit of olive oil or beetroot juice, the color stays, and it looks messy. We also noticed some water rings around the sink area that just don’t go away, no matter how much we clean.

I’d love to have a countertop that feels warm and natural, but at the same
time, I don’t want something that gets permanently damaged. It would be
great if I could do some of the maintenance myself, like treating or
refreshing the surface, so that it always looks clean and inviting.

  MARBLE: Alex, the Airbnb host
Hi there, I am Alex and I run a cozy Airbnb apartment in the city.
A few months ago, I invested in a beautiful marble countertop for the kitchen,
because I wanted the place to look stylish and high-end for my guests.

The problem is that marble is not the easiest material to maintain. Since many different guests use the kitchen, I can’t always control how they treat the countertop. I’m a bit worried about stains, scratches, and damage from things like red wine, coffee, or lemon juice.

At the moment I’m writing the house rules and welcome guide for my Airbnb. I’d like to include some short and clear instructions for my guests about how to use the marble countertop without ruining it.
Can you give me some advice on what I should write on my website/guide? Like what to warn guests about, what they should avoid, and maybe some easy cleaning tips?

  CONCRETE: Rebecca, the new home-owner
Hello! I have recently bought my first house, a large loft in the center of the city, and I love the modern interior and industrial details. The home came with a large open kitchen with a concrete countertop. Apparently the kitchen was never really used by the previous owners so it still looks brand new. Even the appliances look untouched so I was a little afraid to use the kitchen at first.

I do like to cook and entertain but after throwing a big housewarming party I noticed that the countertop was scratched in some places. It even seems like one of my guests might have spilled something because I also found some light stains near the edges.

What is the best way to deal with these scratches and the discolouration?
And how can I protect my concrete countertop from any further damage,
especially when cooking meals and entertaining?
