What’s Going On in This Picture?
After looking closely at the image, think about these three questions:

  1. What is going on in this picture?
  2. What do you see that makes you say that?
  3. What more can you find?

What’s Going On in This Picture?
This image comes from the May, 2021 article “Lucha Libre, Yoga, Dancing: Welcome to Mexico City’s Vaccination Sites.”

The article details efforts in Mexico City to calm elderly residents, who were arriving “really scared” at vaccination sites. City officials cued up bands and masked wrestlers as entertainment.
The original caption reads:
Lucha Libre wrestlers and a band performing at a vaccination center in Mexico City.
The photographer is Natalie Kitroeff.

Conditionals-3
We use the third conditional to talk about something in the past that did not happen.

3. If I had studied hard, I would have passed the exam

Als ik hard gestudeerd zou hebben, zou ik het examen gehaald hebben.

if + past perfect (had + voltooid deelwoord)
hoofdzin: would + have + voltooid deelwoord

Conditionals- 0
- We use the zero conditional to talk about absolute truths/facts
Ice turns to water when/if you heat it

AND:

- imperative (gebiedende wijs)
If you see Frank, tell him to call me

- modals/modal auxilliaries
If you should find my pen, you can keep it.

Slide 10 - Slide

Conditionals- 1
We use the first conditional when we talk about future situations we believe are real or possible.

1. If I study hard, I will pass the exam

'Als ik hard  studeer, zal ik het examen halen'

If + present simple (tegenwoordige tijd)
hoofdzin + 'will' + hele werkwoord

Slide 11 - Slide

Conditionals -2
The second conditional is used to imagine present or future situations that are impossible or unlikely in reality.

2. If I studied hard, I would pass the exam.

Als ik hard zou studeren, zou ik het examen halen (maar ik doe het niet dus waarschijnlijk  haal ik het niet).

If + past simple, hoofdzin: would + hele ww.
