Now, let's move to the relative pronouns
Relative pronouns zijn 'betrekkelijke voornaamwoorden'. Ze verwijzen naar personen of dingen die al eerder in een zin genoemd zijn. Bijvoorbeeld: De man die naar de bakker ging. Dan verwijst het woord die naar de eerder genoemde 'man'. 
Voorbeelden van relative pronouns: who(m), which, that, whose, where, when.

  • Interrogative pronouns zijn vragende voornaamwoorden
  • who, whose, whom, what en which

Who, whose and whom
  • Who gebruik je bij personen: Who is that? 
  • Whose gebruik je bij personen en geeft bezit aan: Whose television is that? Whose brother passed his exam? 
  • Whom gebruik je bij personen als het geen onderwerp is in de zin, je mag de -m dan ook weglaten. Alleen na een voorzetsel is de -m van whom verplicht: 
  • Who(m) did you go out with? With whom did you go out? (want with is dan voorzetsel)

  • What gebruik je bij een keuze uit een groot of onbeperkt aantal: What countries would you like to visit? What shows on Netflix do you recommend? 
  • Which gebruik je bij een keuze uit een beperkt aantal: Which do you prefer, soaps or documentaries? Which Dutch cheese do you like the most?
