OF 

betekent 'mogen'

(Ex: You can't borrow my coat. --> Je mag mijn jas niet lenen)

LET OP! Je gebruikt 'can' alleen in de Present Simple

Could: When & How to use?

betekent 'zou kunnen'

(Ex: It could be a problem --> Het zou een probleem kunnen zijn.)

OF

betekent 'verleden tijd van can'

(Ex: I couldn't finish it. --> Ik kon het niet afmaken)

Could: When & How to use?

betekent 'beleefd vragen om hulp/toestemming'

(Ex: Could you open the window? --> Zou je het raam kunnen openen?)

LET OP! Je gebruikt 'could' alleen in de Present Simple OF Past Simple.

To be able to: When & How to use?

betekent 'kunnen/in staat zijn'

(Ex: He was able to do it. --> Hij kon het doen.)

LET OP! Je gebruikt 'to be able to' als 'can' of 'could' niet kan.

Ook in combinatie met 'have, has, shall & should'

To be allowed to: When & How to use?

(betekent 'mogen/toestemming hebben')

Ex: Are you allowed to stay up late? --> Mag jij tot laat opblijven?

LET OP! Je gebruik 'to be allowed to' als 'can' of 'could' niet kan
