The western Roman empire ended in 476 because of the mass migrations. Many tribes had entered the Roman empire and started to conquer territory.
For example the Visigoten conquered Rome.

Slide 5 - Slide

Explanation: After the Romans
So why did peasants serve a lord?
After the mass migrations Europe became a dangerous place and people needed protection. Peasants could seek refuge in a castle or a monastry. In return the peasants had to work on the lands of their lord. These lands are called domain.

Slide 6 - Slide

On the domain the lord lived in the manor house. The peasant (called serfs) lived in the village ( in farmsteads).

Slide 7 - Slide

The serfs had to pay taxes to their lord and do chores for him. These chores are called vassal services.

Slide 8 - Slide

Working of serfs on a domain is called manorialism.
Serfs were not allowed to leave their domain. We call this serfdom.
