The difference between memory and storage and identify different types of each.​

Why is this important?​

Understanding how data is stored and accessed is key to knowing how a computer works and understanding our own learning.

Key words:

  • Volatile - it needs power to keep data.
  • RAM - random access memory
  • ROM - Read only memory
  • Memory - temporary storage
  • Storage - long term storage

Slide 3 - Slide

Memory = Temporary, fast storage used by the CPU​

Secondary storage = long term storage of data and files.

RAM = Volatile memory, stores open applications and frequently used instructions.

ROM = Non-volatile memory, stores programs needed to start systems called the Bootstrap/BIOS.
