TOPIC 2: Being in the world
In this topic you will learn about food chains, molecules in food, the digestive system, combustion inside and outside the body.
p. 45-89

Slide 2 - Slide

TOPIC 2.4: COMBUSTION IN THE BODY
  • I know the difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration
  • I know the chemical formula of both aerobic and anaerobic respiration
  • I know the disadvantages of anaerobic respiration
  • I know what fermentation is and can give examples of fermentation in different foods
  • I know the chemical formula for fermentation
p. 76-81

TOPIC 2.4: COMBUSTION IN THE BODY
  • Combustion
  • Aerobic respiration
  • Anaerobic respiration
  • Oxygen debt
  • Fermentation
p.76-81

Slide 4 - Slide

ENERGY
  • Energy is needed for survival and is used for
  • Building new cells
  • Movement
  • Heat

  • Food webs show sources of energy for different organisms
  • Digestion breaks down the food into smaller molecules
  • Respiration is the process of getting the energy from these molecules
  • Combustion is the process of burning something
  • combustion inside the body is respiration!
  •

AEROBIC RESPIRATION
  • Aerobic respiration is combustion with oxygen
  • The formula is:
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy

  • Do you remember the chemical formulas for these substances?

p.76-81

ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION
  • Anaerobic respiration takes place when your cells don’t have enough oxygen, for example, when you exercise very hard.
  • The formula is:
glucose → lactic acid + energy

  • Do you remember the chemical formulas for these substances?

p.76-81
FORMULA

Slide 8 - Slide

ANAEROBIC RESPIRATION
This type of respiration has disadvantages:
  • Gives you way less energy
  • The lactic acid causes cramps
  • You will still breathe hard after exercising, this extra oxygen is needed to break down the lactic acid. This is called oxygen debt

p.76-81

Slide 10 - Video

FERMENTATION
  • Fermentation is anaerobic respiration that takes place in plants, fungi or bacteria
  • The formula is:
glucose → alcohol + carbon dioxide + energy

This type of respiration is used to make beer
and wine, but also foods like bread, yogurt
and sauerkraut.
