Napoleon, the emperor
  • Coup in 1799
  • Ruled like a dictator
  • May 1804: French Senate agrees to name Napoleon as emperor of the French
  • Napoleon crowns himself, pope only a witness

The Napoleonic Wars
  • Made Napoleon famous
  • 1792-1815: seven wars
  • Napoleon won about 60 battles, lost just a few
  • Code Napoleon in all regions controlled by France

First defeat
  • Russians refused to stop trading with Britain
  • Napoleon went to war with 500.000 soldiers
  • Food shortages, extreme weather, bad infrastructure, terrible hygienic conditions
  • Only 50.000 returned home

  • Napoleon was exiled (Elba)
  • He escaped and returned to power
  • June 1815: Battle of Waterloo
  • Napoleon defeated by a European coalition
  • Exiled again (St. Helena) and died there (1821)

  • Europe needed peace and stability
  • Most wanted a return to power to the former rulers
  • Holy Alliance - Austria, Russia and Prussia wanted to restore monarchies

1814-15 Congress of Vienna
Assembly of several European countries in Vienna after the victory over Napoleon, where the future of Europe was discussed.
  • Countries surrounding France were strengthened (Netherlands, Prussia)
  • Restoration, return of power to ancient royal families who had ruled European countries before Napoleon.
  • Monarchs  helped each other to fights revolutions.

Victorious countries redrew map of Europe. 

They were conservative. Against new revolutionary ideas about freedom, equality and brotherhood.

Wanted a strong state north of France.
