What is a Fraction?
A fraction is a way to show parts of a whole. When you share something equally, you make fractions.
Halves: 1 out of 2 Equal Parts
When we split something into two equal parts, each part is called a half.
Quarters: 1 out of 4
If we divide something into four equal parts, each part is a quarter. Four quarters make one whole.
Halves, Quarters, and Thirds
Halves
2 equal parts. Each part is 1/2.
3 equal parts. Each is 1/3 of the whole.
Thirds
Finding Thirds
When we share something into three equal parts, each is called a third. Three thirds make a whole.
Reflect: Where Do We See Fractions?
