Let's see again what the difference is between the Present Simple and the Present Continuous

Present simple
You use it for..
  1. Facts (feiten)
  2. Habits (gewoonten)
  3. Things happening regularly (regelmatig)
Keywords: usually, often, always, never, sometimes

Present simple
I always walk to the park
Do I always walk to the park?
I do not (don't) always walk to the park.
They eat  pizza sometimes
Do they eat pizza sometimes?
They don't eat pizza sometimes.

Present Continuous
So.. the present simple is pretty... simple.
But what about the continuous form? How and when do we use the present continuous?

You use the pr. cont. when:

  1. Something is happening right now
  2. When you are annoyed by something


Keywords: (right) now, at the moment
always and never can be used to express irritation

Am I walking towards the park right now?
I am not walking to the park right now.  

He is eating a sandwich.
Is he eating a sandwich? 
He is not (isn't) eating a sandwich.

Present Simple: Feiten, gewoonten, regelmatigheden

Present Continuous: gebeurt NU, is binnenkort klaar.

I play soccer
 --> ‘I play soccer’ tells us that playing tennis is something the speaker always does. It is part of a routine or habit. We can call this a permanent situation.

I am playing soccer
--> ‘I am playing soccer’ tells us that the speaker is playing soccer right now. Soon the game will be over. We call this a temporary situation.
