What is a Rational Number?

A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction. This means it has a top number (numerator) and a bottom number (denominator), and both of these are whole numbers. The only rule is that the bottom number (denominator) cannot be zero. For example, 1/2, -3/4, and 5 are all rational numbers because they can be written as fractions.

Examples of Rational Numbers

Examples include 1/2, -3, 7.0, and 0.25. All of these can be written as a fraction.

What is NOT a Rational Number?

Numbers like π and √2 cannot be written as simple fractions. These are called irrational numbers.
