Instructor invites students to show an example of a steady beat. Pick one example for class to use.
"Ready and echo me."
Instructor reads rhythms four beats at a time using neutral syllable "bah." You may need to point to your self at your turn and to class at their turn as a reminder when to echo.

Once all rhythms are read, repeat using rhythm syllables (quarter note = ta, eighth notes = ta-ti; refer to rhythm syllable cheat sheet if needed)

Remind students which bars to play for high and low (G/dark green for high, E/yellow for low)
Record this activity for student assessment.
Place students in groups of 4-5 according to assigned color and number.
Invite students to come up 2 groups at a time to play slides.
Stop recording once all students have been assessed.

"I want you to remember those 8 beats you made up last week using ta and ta-ti. Say those 8 beats for me."
Students say improvisations while instructor counts 8 beats on fingers.
"Pick a bar and tap the rhythm with your fingers."
Students say and tap while instructor counts 8 beats on fingers.
May add mallets if students are successful.
Choose 3-4 students to be improvisors.
Putting it together: Class plays\ "Snowflakes."
One student improvises 8 beats.
Class plays "Snowflakes."
Second student improvises 8 beats.
Class plays "Snowflakes."
Continue until all chosen students have improvised and class ends on "Snowflakes."
