reflexive pronouns
  • When?  when the subject and the pronoun are the same person or thing. 
  • examples: 
Are you impressed with yourself? (you = yourself)
They are lying to themselves
  • plural (meervoud): -selves and singular (enkelvoud): -self

  • After to wash, to shave, to dress we normally don't use a reflexive pronoun. 
  • Example: After breakfast, he took a shower and shaved. 

  • However, if you want to put emphasis on the person doing it you can. 
  • example: He shaved himself, despite his broken arm.

Reciprocal pronouns
  • When? 2 or more persons/things are doing the same thing for or towards the other. 
  • Example: He liked her and she liked him -> They liked each other / They liked one another. 
  • reciprocal nouns can be used in a possessive form by adding 's 
  • Example: They are staying in each other's house.
