All the literature and literary movements from the 20th century were brought into the 21st century. But new forms of literature emerged or became more prominent.

The terrible events of 9/11 changed the course of history. And just like during other shocking events in history people turned to literature to express themselves. Numerous poems were written and a post 9/11 literature emerged.

It was not until 1967 that homosexuality became legalized in the UK.  After this time it became slowly more and more accepted to come across homesexual characters in literature. Today one can find a lot of poems and books that give us an insight in the life and troubles of people with a sexual orientation which is not considered to be mainstream.

In the 21st century teenagers became an economically interesting reading public for publishers and nowadays you get thousands of hits when you look for young adult literature. Almost all genres are represented.
Stories about the specific challenges of youth ( especially when the transition from child to adult poses problems) are referred to as coming-of -age novels.
