PRIMARY SEXUAL CHARACTERISTICS

  • Are present at birth.
  • Show a clear difference between the sexes.

examples: 

male: penis
female: labia & vagina
SECONDARY SEX. CHARACTERISTICS

  • Develop later in life.
  • Form under the influence of hormones.
  • Often make the visual differences between the sexes bigger. 
examples: 
male: muscle development, sperm production
female: breasts develop, menstrual cycle.

The goal of contraception is to prevent the fertilisation of and egg cell (conception).
Different methods are:

Emergency Contraception

If you are worried your are pregnant. There are options:
  • morning after pill (first 72 hours)
  • IUD (first 120 hours)
  • abortion (ethics)

  • Can be various pathogens.
  • Some can be cured, some cannot.

Menstrual cycle
  • Is between 2-9 weeks (average 28 days=4 weeks).
  • it causes periods (shedding of uterus lining)
  • Women are fertile around and after the ovulation (egg cells lives ~24 hrs).
  • Hormone levels are constantly changing.

  • FSH- Follicle Stimulating Hormone
  • Oestrogen- plays a role in ovulation and stimulation thickening of uterus lining
  • LH - causes ovulation
  • Progesteron - maintains thick uterus lining

Pregnancy cycle
  • Fertilised egg produces HCG
  • HCG causes Progesteron to stay high
  • HCG is known as the pregnancy hormone, this is what you test for with a pregnancy test.
