WHEN TO USE IT?
You use direct speech to repeat the direct words that someone has said. You place these sentences between quotation marks.
Ex: 'I am teaching you new grammar now.'

You use indirect speech to retell what someone else has said. Because the sentences have already been spoken, they are in the past tense. You use ... said.
Ex: She said that she was teaching you new grammar now.

Slide 8 - Slide

TENSES
The tense that you used in the direct speech, changes when you use the indirect speech.

You can use the word that in indirect speech, but you can also leave it out.
