•NON ACCIDENTIAL PHYSICAL FORCE RESULTING IN  INJURY, PAIN, OR IMPAIRMENT

•METHODS INCLUDE HITTING, NIPPING, PUNCHING, BEING FORCEFUL, BURNING

•SIGNS INCLUDE UNEXPLAINED /INCONSISTENT  MULTIPLE INJURIES HEALING AT DIFFERENT RATES

•BRUISING, SWELLING, WELTS, FINGER MARKS, CIGARETTE BURNS, UNEXPLAINED CLUMPS OF HAIR

•MISUSE OF MEDICATION E.G SEDATION

Physical Abuse - Signs

Neglecting to seek medical treatment for service user or unacceptable time before GP is contacted.

Skin breaking down, ulcers, bed sores, being left in soiled bedclothes

Subdued behaviour in the presence of a particular carer or family member

Malnutrition, unexplained weight loss, dehydration

What is meant by "skin breaking down"?

PSYCHOLOGICAL ABUSE

For people that have learning disabilities or dementia, these types of changes may be passed off as part of their condition, so could be hard to spot if you don't know the person well.

Financial abuse

• Misuse or theft of money, property either directly or through fraud.

• Loans made under duress

• Lower standards of care/ lack of supplies e.g. food available

• Preventing person at risk from accessing their bank account

• Misuse of Power of Attorney

Signs of financial abuse

• Unexplained shortage of money

• Missing personal possessions

• Unexplained bank withdrawals

• No receipts for purchases

• Lack of accounting /audit in setting

• Recent suspicious changes to wills, deeds, policies
