Horticulture = mainly growing fruit and vegetables on small fields (chicory, asparagus, apples and plums).

Greenhouse farming = growing plants in greenhouses (tomatoes, peppers, roses and potted plants).

Asexual reproduction
Rhizomes (Wortelstokken) =stems that grow underground; at some locations there are bulges, from which new plants grow

Runners (Uitlopers) = long stem that creeps along the ground and where roots arise on some locations, from which new plants grow

Slide 10 - Slide

Asexual reproduction
Bulbs (Bollen) = thick leaves that lie very closely together; in here, the plant stores reserve food; new plants can also sprout from bulbs

Tubers (Knollen) = swollen roots or thick underground stems in which the plant stores reserve food

Plant breeding
  1. The farmer chooses plants with the properties (crossbreeding).
  2.  From the developed seeds, he cultivates new plants.
 3. From these plants he selects the best ones and crossbreeds them further. He repeats the crossbreeding and selecting processes a few times.
4. When plants arise with the best characteristics, he reproduces them asexually.
